Research InterestTelomeres are nucleoprotein complexes that protect chromosome ends and shorten with cell division and aging. We are interested in how telomere shortening influences cancer, stem cell function and genomic stability. Telomerase is a reverse transcriptase that synthesizes telomere repeats and is expressed in stem cells and in cancer. We have found that telomerase also regulates stem cells and we are pursuing the function of telomerase through diverse genetic and biochemical approaches.

Research InterestMy research integrates clinical care of patients with novel treatments for a variety of hematologic disorders. I see patients with a wide range of problems with a particular focus on chronic lymphocytic leukemia and multiple myeloma. I provide comprehensive consultative services as well as treatment for both the acute and chronic leukemias as well as non-malignant conditions such as clotting disorders and thrombocytopenia.

Research InterestRegulation of hematopoiesis in myeloid malignancies with special emphasis on myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Laboratory studies utilize DNA microarrays to evaluate differential gene expression in MDS and AML. Clinical studies focus on using specific biologic targeting agents to treat these disorders.

Research InterestOur laboratory explores a variety of projects including angiogenesis, intestinal stem cell biology, and hepatic insulin resistance. Studies in angiogenesis include characterization of endothelial microRNA and GPCR ko mice, and anti-angiogenic therapy of cancer. Our work on intestinal stem cell biology utilizes primary intestinal culture and in vivo adenoviral/ko strategies to study stem cells and model colon cancer. Investigations into mechanisms of hepatic insulin resistance are underway.

Research InterestOur long term interest is to have a better understanding of the natural antithrombotic pathways and the pathophysiology of vascular thrombosis. We have focused on the biology of thrombin, the key enzyme in the clotting cascade. Our goal is to develop new antithrombotic agents and devise new diagnostic tests for vascular thrombotic disorders.
