Research InterestMy research is focused on attaining a better understanding of the initiation, maintenance, and progression of lymphoid tumors, and their response to immunochemotherapy toward improving current treatment strategies. In this effort, I employ tools from functional genomics, computational biology, molecular genetics, and mouse models. I hope to apply this knowledge towards the design of clinical trials in the treatment of patients with lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.

Research InterestThe focus of my research is on ways to design new and improve upon current cancer vaccines. A primary approach is to use vaccination to induce anti-cancer T cells, then adoptively transfer those T cells back into the patient after lymphodepletion, such as with chemotherapy or autologous stem cell transplant. The concept is to thus provide primed immune cells during this lymphodepleted 'window of opportunity' to allow immune reconstitution in a setting that educates it to hate cancer.

Research InterestDr. Michael F. Clarke is the Associate Director of the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. In addition to his clinical duties in the division of Oncology, Dr. Clarke maintains a laboratory focused on two areas of research: i) the control of self-renewal of normal stem cells and their malignant counterparts; and ii) the identification and characterization of cancer stem cells. A central issue in stem cell biology is to understand the mechanisms that regulate self-renewa..

Research InterestDr. Fan studies how turning off oncogenes (cancer genes) can cause tumor regression in preclinical and clinical studies. Based on preclinical findings, she has initiated a clinical trial studying atorvastatin for the treatment of patients with certain non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. In the laboratory, she also uses preclinical models of cancer to validate new nanotechnology strategies for tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Research InterestMy laboratory investigates how oncogenes initiate and sustain tumorigenesis. I have developed model systems whereby I can conditionally activate oncogenes in normal human and mouse cells in tissue culture or in specific tissues of transgenic mice. In particular using the tetracycline regulatory system, I have generated a conditional model system for MYC-induced tumors. I have shown that cancers caused by the conditional over-expression of the MYC proto-oncogene regress with its inactivation.

Research InterestDr. Guardino has studied the mechanisms by which the immune system recognizes foreign substances like viruses, microorganisms and cancer and the ways the immune system becomes deregulated and attacks “self” as seen in autoimmunity. Her research identified the cellular interactions involved in immune recognition and has led to treatment strategies for cancer using immune therapies and biologic treatments.

Research InterestMy research is comprised of two main projects. I study the Hedgehog signaling pathway which controls cell proliferation, differentiation and patterning in a range of tissues during development. I am interested in the biochemical mechanisms that control the Hh signal transduction cascade. Secondly, I am using a novel, high-throughput magnetic sifter device, to isolate live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from whole blood to allow for their cell biological analysis.

Research InterestI am a PhD research scientist who is passionate about clinical cancer research and the use of advanced technology to improve cancer therapy. My current goal is to combine bioinformatics techniques and immunology research in order to understand why cancer patients' cells resist existing therapies. I am especially interested in the critical choice of the first therapy for the patient. We are currently applying this approach to study signaling in leukemia and lymphoma.

Research InterestWe are working to elucidate the biochemical and cell biological principles that govern signaling pathways that sit at the intersection between developmental biology and cancer. Our toolkit combines bulk biochemical techniques, such as cell-free reconstitution, with microscopy using novel optical probes to study the dynamics of signal propagation in cells. We strive to develop novel strategies for the manipulation of these pathways for cancer therapies and applications in regenerative medicine.
